“Our vision is to bridge the gap between market demand and fresh egg supply in Puntland and beyond. We are grateful to Shuraako for believing in our potential and helping us achieve our goals,” says Dr. Abdisamed.

In November 2014, the founders of Soma Chicken Farm sought to understand whether the region’s climate, water supply, and locally sourced feed could support sustainable egg and meat production, and it sure can!

This began as a small-scale pilot project to assess the feasibility of poultry farming in Puntland, but today, Soma Chicken has not only proven the concept but has become a vital player in reducing Puntland’s reliance on imported eggs, offering fresh, healthier, and locally sourced alternatives to the market.

Overcoming Challenges and Driving Job Creation

Despite the promising results, Soma Chicken faced significant initial challenges, primarily around securing the necessary investments to scale operations. This is where Shuraako stepped in, providing critical financing through two investments totaling $269,579. These funds helped Soma Chicken procure essential equipment, expand its farming operations, and boost production capacity.

The investments from Shuraako catalyzed Soma Chicken’s growth in 3 major ways:

  • Job Creation: Soma Chicken created 30–40 new jobs, marking a 60% increase in staffing levels, with positions ranging from farmhands to administrative roles.
  • Market Expansion: The company significantly increased its market share, addressing the local demand for fresh eggs and positioning itself as a leader in Puntland’s poultry industry.
  • Revenue Growth: Soma Chicken’s revenue surged by 50%, reflecting the growing demand for its fresh and high-quality eggs.

Innovation and Expansion

Soma Chicken produces an impressive 20,000 fresh eggs daily, all of which are sold on the same day. While the company’s primary focus remains egg production, plans are underway to expand into chicken meat sales. Additionally, Soma Chicken has ambitions to enter new markets by exporting eggs across the East African region, further solidifying its role in transforming Somalia’s poultry sector.

Impact on Local Communities

By providing fresh, nutritious, and locally produced eggs, Soma Chicken has improved food security and reduced Puntland’s reliance on imported eggs, particularly from Yemen and the Gulf. This shift not only supports the local economy but also fosters greater self-sufficiency in the region.

The Road Ahead

With increasing demand and a clear vision, Soma Chicken is planning its next phase of growth. The company has requested a third investment through Shuraako to further expand its production capacity. Its long-term goal is to bridge the gap between local demand and supply while extending its reach to regional markets.

Soma Chicken stands as a testament to the power of local innovation and investment in fostering sustainable development and economic empowerment in Somalia.
