Bixin Group is Driving Somalia Forward: Safer, Smarter, and Sustainable Transport
When Abdisalam Ali Omar looks back at the early days of Bixin Group, he remembers roads that were long, dusty, and unpredictable. Travelers in Puntland and Somaliland relied on old cargo trucks that often broke down, delaying journeys and putting lives at risk.
"We saw the struggles of people who had no safe or reliable way to travel," Abdisalam recalls. "That's what inspired Bixin's founders to create a transport system that was efficient, affordable, and dignified."
Founded in 2003, Bixin Transportation became the first organized intercity transport company in Puntland, connecting cities such as Bosaso, Garowe, Galkayo, and Las Anod. Over time, it grew into a regional leader in passenger and parcel services, with additional operations extending into Ethiopia.
The Turning Point: Shuraako's Strategic Investment
To meet rising demand, Bixin needed to expand its fleet but faced limited access to affordable financing. Local banks offered short repayment periods and high profit rates, making it difficult to invest in long-term growth.
That changed when Shuraako Capital stepped in with a $181,429 Murabaha-based investment under the Nordic Horn of Africa Opportunities Fund (NHAOF).
"The partnership with Shuraako gave us the flexibility we needed," says Abdisalam. "We acquired 14 new Toyota Hiace minibuses and a tow truck, essential additions that strengthened our capacity and improved our services."
Job Creation and Economic Growth
With the new fleet, Bixin expanded its operations and hired 30 new employees, including drivers, mechanics, and administrative staff. That's a 45% increase in workforce.
"This investment didn't just grow our business; it created livelihoods for many families," Abdisalam says. "Most of our drivers are young people who now have stable income and training opportunities."
Sales Performance
The expanded fleet and improved efficiency led to a 10% increase in company revenue. To enhance transparency, Bixin introduced digital accounting systems and launched Footbook, an online ticketing platform that allows customers to book seats and send payments electronically.
These systems help track income and expenses accurately and make the services more accessible.
Business Development and Innovation
The financing also allowed Bixin to enhance safety and service quality by introducing:
- GPS tracking and speed monitoring for all vehicles.
- Engine cut-off systems to prevent speeding.
- Comprehensive driver health checks before recruitment.
Passenger Abdillahi Mohamed Aden praises the improvements: "Their trips are safe, timely, and comfortable. Bixin is reliable and customer-focused. I always choose them for my travel."
Even amid challenges like regional conflicts that temporarily affected routes, Bixin maintained open communication with Shuraako. Because the organization is invested in the success of each business it partners with, the organization responded with flexibility, allowing repayment rescheduling until operations stabilized. This isn't something typically offered by other lenders.
Looking Ahead
Today, Bixin Group is setting its sights on expanding cargo and passenger services into southern Somalia and Ethiopia. The company also plans to add more ticketing offices and continue investing in digital innovation to improve customer experience.
"Our journey with Shuraako showed us what partnership really means," Abdisalam says. "They believed in our vision and helped us move from survival to sustainability. Now, we're driving growth for the entire region."
