How do I use the map?

When you first arrive, the map shows all selections from all four categories:

•  Sectors (type of aid) – buttons are on bottom of map

•  Years (2010, 2011, 2012) – buttons are just above the Sectors buttons

•  Regions (Somali regions) – buttons are the regions themselves on the map of Somalia/Somaliland.

•  Agencies (aid agencies working in Somalia/Somaliland who have sent reports to the UN-OCHA’s website) – buttons are to the left of the map of Somalia.

Selecting and Deselecting Categories

You can deselect any individual option from each category by clicking on the corresponding button.  You can deselect everything for any category by clicking the “Clear” button for that category.

To reselect an option, simply click that button again.  Sectors, regions, and agencies each also have “All” buttons that select every option in that specific category.

  2. Project report summaries: these are the specific reports written by the agencies, according to your selection criteria.
  • To learn more about them, click on the report.
  • For further information beyond what is on our site click on the hyperlink included in each report summary.

Troubleshooting

I am having trouble viewing the entire map on my browser/screen, how can I fix this?

Click on the full window button in the upper right corner of the map.  It looks like this:

How can I know the names of the agencies?

As you scroll over different agency acronyms their full names will be given in the upper left section of the map.  It is a black rectangular box.

How can I know the names of the regions?

As you scroll over the different regions their names and basic information will be given in the blank box in the upper right side of map area.

Map Methodology

Where does the data come from?

Map data and the accompanying agency reports come directly from the United Nations’ Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs - Financial Tracking Service (FTS) website. Please note that for technical reasons we were not able to include information for the following agencies which received funds in 2012: ACT/NCA, Diakonie Emergency Aid, GRRN, JS, SAGE.  These agencies collectively received $1,457,060 and will be included in the next update.

How was it accessed?

Shuraako downloaded the data used from the FTS website on June 7, 2013.

What was added to the FTS data?

The Shuraako team went through each report and identified all the regions mentioned or implied.  We then divided the total amount of money requested/received for that project by the total number of regions identified.

Each report was then given:

•  The names of the regions the project report identifies.

•  Average funds requested (total funds requested, divided by regions identified)

•  Average funds received (total funds received, divided by regions identified)

•  The percent of the funds received compared to funds requested.
